Apple Ipods (Buy one now or wait)

by admin 5. September 2005 14:09

I have begun looking at picking up another Ipod, but some of the things that I keep getting stuck on include:

      1. The newly announced color Ipod Mini
      2. The newly announced 8 gig Ipod Mini
      3. 20 gig vs. 60 gig, it is 40 gig for only $100
      4. Talk about video enabled Ipods
      5. Is it time to break away from the Ipod in favor of a competitive product?

The last item is a really tough one for me to decide. The Ipod / Itunes monopoly so to speak is a pain. Apple does not seem to be wavering from there position that they do not need to support any other devices with Itunes, nor do they need to facilitate any other software to support the Ipod.

How long can they stick to this position before it hurts them. Another related problem is Itunes does not easily facilitate the client / server deployment I would like in my home. The bottom line is I have too much music to store on each computer I want to play from. The best client server solutions allow for only one Itunes library file (the xml file). That limitation prevents user and computer specific play counts and song ratings.

I guess the problem of new technology being release will always exist. The concern about picking up an Ipod now versus later will always exist. I also can not decide if I would even care to have video on my Ipod. What am I go to watch on that little screen? For movies I can use my PSP, my laptop, etc. Additionally I spend a lot of my listening time while I am driving or working out. I doubt watching something in either case would be practical.
